Born 1962 in Latvia. Graduated from Faculty of Paediatry at Medical Institute ot Riga (present Riga Stradins University) in 1986. After became a clinical ordinator in the Paediatry, later PhD student in the same field. Assistant in Department of Histology since 1991, but Docent and Head of the Department of Histology since 1994. Underwent qualification in Lunds and Umeo Universities, Sweden, and at the Garvan Institute of Medical research, Sydney, Australia. A Head of the Department of anatomy and histology and at Medical Faculty of Latvian University (1998-2002), a Head of the Residency at the Institute of Postgraduated Medical Education at the Latvian University (2000-2003). Professor and Director of the Institute of Anatomy and Anthropology at Riga Stradins University since 2001. Head of the Department of Embryology (2002-2008), a Head of the Department of Morphology since 2009 at Riga Stradins University.

The author over 600 scientific publications, 4 monographies; more than 200 presentations in scientific meetings. Supervisor of 25 defended PhD thesis and currently guided 6 PhD students.

Scientific field of interest: diffuse neuroendocrne system in human and mammalians; growth factors; tissue regeneration and remodelation; biocompatibility of biomaterials. Histochemical and immunocytochemical methods, in situ hybridization; TUNEL; electron microscopy; cell cultures.  Developmental aspects for the tissue and cells. Comparative embryology; morphologic research on the animal’s reproductive, gastroenterological, immune and nerve system. Stem cells.
