Çiler Çelik Özenci

Dr. Ciler Celik-Ozenci graduated from the University of Hacettepe, Turkey with a Bachelor’s degree in Dentistry in 1997. She has received a PhD in Histology and Embryology from University of Akdeniz, Antalya, Turkey in 2003. Currently, she has been working as a Full Professor lecturer and as a principal investigator of reproductive biology programme in the same department.

She has held a fellowship position at Yale University, while performing her PhD thesis between the years 2001-2002.  During that period, she has worked at Sperm Physiology Laboratory, in Division of Reproductive Endocrinology, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Yale University under the supervisory of Dr. Gabor Huszar. One of her key scientific achievement was to coauthor as a major investigator in a series of research for the development of an objective assay where mature human sperm can be selected by hyaluronic acid binding.

In 2002, she came back to the Department of Histology and Embryology at Akdeniz University in Antalya, Turkey to finish her PhD thesis which was investigating the question “whether morphological selection of human sperm for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) reflects its genetic status, thus would better contribute to human fertilization and increase fertilization rates during assisted reproductive techniques”. Historically, her research concerned the molecular mechanisms of spermatogenesis, with special emphasis on how such mechanisms may impart effect upon male fertility.

Dr. Ciler Celik-Ozenci’s future research themes include: understanding the molecular mechanisms of preimplantation embryo development under stress conditions, investigating the deleterious effects of ovarian cryopreservation and transplantation upon primordial follicle biology and function, studying the role of mTOR pathway during spermatogonial stem cell proliferation and entry to meiosis, and understanding the regulation of blood-testis barrier.

Dr. Ciler Celik-Ozenci is a member of the ESHRE, the ASRM, the Turkish Andrology Society, Turkish Society of Clinical Embryology and the Turkish Society of Histology and Embryology.

Dr. Celik-Ozenci is the recipient of multiple awards for research, including: Akdeniz University “Young Scientist Award”, Turkish Society of Histology & Embryology Award, Turkish Society of Reproductive Medicine Best Poster Award, Prof. Dr. Alpay Kelami Male Infertility Award, and UNESCO-Loreal Women in Science Award.

She has more than 65 publications in leading scientific journals and edited textbooks of reproductive medicine, male infertility, and fertility preservation. She is on the referee pool of several journals and has lectured on reproductive medicine.
